Short E-unit history

There were many types of E-units. They were built by the Electro-Motive Corporation, EMC. Later the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors, EMD. All had 2-stroke (The Winton engine was 4-stroke), 12-cylinder V-type diesel engines, 2 in each locomotive. The diesel engine turned an electric generator providing electricity to the four traction motors, one for each powered axle. That way the diesel engine could run at optimum speed, at all locomotive speeds.

The bogies were of the A1A-type, with one unpowered axle in the middle, just to carry the weight of the locomotive.

All E-units were used to pull passenger trains and were equipped with steam generators to provide heating and power to passenger cars.

The B-units were cabless units, called Booster-units. They were controlled from the cab of an A-unit. Their purpose was of course to make a more powerful formation of locomotives without having to pay for a complete cab, with all expensive equipment.

The types EA, E1A, E3A, E5A and E6A had slanted nose, E2A a kind of rounded nose and E7A, E8A nad E9A had the same bulldog nose as the F-units.
